Accused child pornster to face new charges
Accused child pornographer Nathan Lee Evans made his first appearance in an Iqaluit courtroom this past Tuesday to learn he'll be facing new charges.
Dressed in a navy blue jump suit from the Baffin Correctional Centre, sporting several days' stubble and appearing confused about court proceedings, Evans was in court for about 10 minutes as lawyers set his next court date.
"It's a very comprehensive investigation," said Crown prosecutor Rachel Furey.
Evans, 35, had his case adjourned until May 6 because the Crown and RCMP are preparing to bring more charges against him. The Iqaluit man already faces 12 charges stemming from a police raid last month.
Police raided a Iqaluit home and seized computers allegedly containing photos and videos of Evans engaged in sex acts with girls under the age of 18. Three of those girls are alleged to be under the age of 14.
In addition to charges of making and possessing child pornography, Evans also faces five counts of sexual assault, three counts of sexual interference, and two counts of forcible confinement.
In court, Evans' lawyer, Christopher Debicki waived his client's right to have the charges read because of the "significant materials yet to be disclosed."
It's not clear what the charges are, when they'll be laid or how many more allegations Evans will face.
RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Mike Toohey said that because the case is a file of the Iqaluit detachment and not V Division, he doesn't know any of the details surrounding the new charges.
"At the end of the day they're going to be in discussion with the Crown and decide what are the most appropriate charges and then they'll lay [the charges]," he said.
Neither Furey, nor Charlie Gauthier, the Iqaluit detachment commander, responded to requests for an interview before deadline this week.
