KRPF seize $40,000 taped to man's body

Police probe possible drug-sale link to cash

Police in Kuujjuaraapik got a surprise last Friday evening when they found more than $40,000 in cash taped to the chest of an Air Inuit passenger en route to Montreal from Inukjuak.

During a routine security check in Kuujjuaraapik, one of the passengers became extremely agitated when the wand that is used to check for metal on an individual's body began to beep loudly when security agents waved it near him.

Constables from the Kativik Regional Police Force, who were called in to assist in dealing with the man, saw that he had several packages under his shirt.

After the man was taken to the KRPF station, where he was charged with disturbing the peace, police did a thorough check of the man's body.

They found that the packages taped to his chest were filled with cash, including bills of 20-, 50-, and 100-dollar denominations.

The individual packages were neatly labelled "Sanikiluaq," "Inukjuak" and "Kuujjuaraapik," with the amount of money and air fare, as expenses, indicated on each one.

The man told police that the money represented cash received from the sale of carvings.

Police released the man and are continuing their investigation into the origin of this money.
