Do you like the way Iqaluit has changed?
Interviews
and Photos: Tina Rose
Anne Mullin
I think so. A lot more things to do and friendly people.
Dwayne Burke
I like the changes but I think most of it is a waste of money.
Like, they're building a new hospital when the one we have isn't
even properly equipped and putting good pavement on already paved
roads instead of the unpaved ones.
Elisapee Nowdluk
It's a nice change, but it grew too fast.
Elissa McKinnon
Yes, I feel that Iqaluit has changed positively, like how the city
is repairing the roads.
Karen Beddard
No. It's a small Northern town with a Southern mentality. That's
not right.
Lisa Pollock
Somewhat. I like the change, but people seem less friendly.
Scott Flieger
Yes, I do. I think Iqaluit is becoming a very prosperous city and
I think that Iqaluit should concentrate more on tourism by accessing
more amenities and accommodations.
Sharon Craig
Yeah, there's a lot more to do here now.

Will you use the new skateboard park?
Interviews
and Photos: Tina Rose
Caleb Little, 12
It's pretty cool, if I get a skateboard I'll use it, but I've never
skateboarded before.
Chris McTaggart, 15
I think it's a good idea as long as it's sturdy and safe, and as
long as if it does break down, the city is able to fix it.
| J.J. Tagak, 10
No, I'm not going to use it. I don't have a skateboard, but I do have a bike.
Leona Ipeelee, 13
I don't see the use for it because we already have basketball courts
and playgrounds. Why not use the money for a new homeless shelter?
Lisa Arsenault, 11
That's cool. If I had a skateboard, I would try it out.
Margaret Ataguyuk, 13
It's cool because we'll get to skate with friends.
Patrick Qammaniq-Hellwig, 12
It's pretty awesome. I'm going to use my roller blades instead
of a skateboard.
Sam Gilhuly, 16
I'm going to try and learn how to skateboard when it's built because
I've always wanted to know how to skateboard.

Are you doing anything to help Joamie shcool?
Interviews
and Photos: Tina Rose
Claude Beauchamp
I put in 12 hours of extremely hard physical work to help put
the fire out. And I would donate money if I could be sure the money
wouldn't be lost in the system.
Elizabeth Colford
I gave money when NorthwesTel was working for donations at NorthMart.
Gaelan Coffin
I'm trying to gather supplies they need in the classroom, like yarn
and bits of bone.
Juanita Nasby
If asked I will offer donations and become involved in any way
I could help.
Katharine Tagak
I made a cake for the cakewalk and cookies for the bake sale
that happened at the legislative assembly on July 26.
Marilyn Scott
We're collecting items that the school is asking for. We also
own sweatshirts from when Joamie School went Green, because we were
on the parent committee, so we're donating a sweater because Joamie's
burnt up.
Sarah Carriere
Yes, for the fundraiser on July 26, I spent the whole afternoon
painting faces.
Tori-Lynne Evans
I am gathering items from the list sent around on behalf of
the Iqaluit library.

Do you think that
the Nunavut court is too lenient on violent offenders?
Interviews
and Photos: Tina Rose
Blake MacIsaac
Yes, I do. I feel the Nunavut court system does not punish as severely
as a southern court system would. |
Denis Plaza
Yes, because the whole point of having a court system with punishments
that supposedly fit the crime is to deter criminals from committing
the act again, but with the system the way it is now, people just
getting slaps on the wrist, people just go out and do it again and
again |
Dennis Shappa
Yes, way, way too lenient. I read recently in a newspaper that the
court gave a guy six months for beating his girlfriend. What kind
of court gives such an easy sentence to a repeat offender? |
Heather Coates
Yup, for sure. It seems like nothing is done. Court dates are always
postponed or they only get community service instead of sitting in
jail. |
Jarloo Nowdluk
Too lenient, I see all these assaults and murders and they get away
with a slap on the wrist. |
Jason Sudlovenick
Oh yes, we need more disciplinary programs and counselling for the
young offenders. |
Laura Lavigne
The few violent things I've observed in the paper, the sentences were
more lenient than I expected, compared to down south. |
Russell Kinnear
Absolutely, they're violent offenders. They hurt people. Punishments
should be more inventive. |

Are Iqaluit's playgrounds in bad shape?
Interviews
and Photos: Tina Rose
Joey Idlout, 13
The playgrounds are good. I wish they had sandboxes. |
Nathalie Martel, 12
They're too old; we need new playgrounds with different equipment,
like merry-go-rounds. |
Lawson Seddon, 8
They're all right. The playgrounds are bad because older kids put
bad words on them. |
Miranda Kirk, 11
A lot of people do graffiti on them, but they're fun. Some need more
equipment. |
Zack Piercey, 11
Most playgrounds are okay. My favorite is Nakasuk School playground,
the rest don't have big enough equipment. |
Neoma
Kippomee-Cox, 9
They're fun, but a lot of people wreck them and write bad stuff on
them. |
Nadia Mike, 18
They're okay. There's definitely enough for the whole town, but they
get vandalized all the time. |
John Cruz, 21
Playgrounds in Iqaluit are great, but I'm worried about the safety
because they're always broken. I don't want the kids to get hurt.
And there's lots of garbage. |
