Kuujjuaq man dies in snowmobile mishap

Johnny Adlook, 30, has died of injuries in Kuujjuaq after the snowmobile on which he was a passenger hit an electrical pole on Dec. 22.

The woman who was driving the snowmobile was severely injured.

Adlook and the woman had been drinking at the Ikkaqivik bar before the accident.

Michael Gordon, mayor of Kuujjuaq, called the death very "traumatic." Gordon said the accident underscores the need for a bylaw officer in Kuujjuaq to reinforce the safety and prevention work done by the Kativik Regional Police Force.

"We [the police] do the patrols each and every night, but the police can't be at every corner," he said.

Kuujjuaq plans to post the new bylaw officer position for the community early in 2004.
