Josef Motzfeldt, a cabinet minister in the Greenland home rule government,
was in Washington this week to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell.
The Danish foreign minister, Per Stig Møller, was also on the visit.
During their meetings, they planned to discuss the future of the Thule Air
Base in northern Greenland. The U.S. wants to upgrade Thule into a missile defence
site.
"The negotiations between Greenland/Denmark and the U.S. have moved step-by-step.
Before we go in to the final phase, we need to have further political discussions,"
Motzfeldt said.
Last May, the Danish parliament gave the go-ahead for negotiations with the
U.S. on upgrading the Thule base.
