Norwegians await whale of a meal
SIKU CIRCUMPOLAR NEWS SERVICE
Norway's annual commercial whale hunt is underway, with whale meat due to arrive
in grocery stores within the week. This year's quota is for 670 minke whales.
A total of 33 whaling boats are taking part in this year's whale hunt.
Norway resumed commercial hunts of minke whales in 1993, arguing that North
Atlantic stocks of these whales had recovered.
Norway estimates that there are more than 100,000 in the northeast Atlantic.
Norwegians mostly eat minke whales fried as steaks.
Whale season in Norway will last until August 31.

Greenland hunters shoot bowhead
SIKU CIRCUMPOLAR NEWS SERVICE
Hunters in Greenland shot a bowhead whale that was caught up in a fishing net
last weekend.
Greenland National Radio said the whale was partly entangled, and the fishermen
asked the local officials whether they should kill the whale, which is the practice
for humpbacks that become entangled.
The animal is reported to have escaped from the net as night fell, but it had
been injured from attempts by the hunters to kill it with rifles.
In 2000, hunters killed a fin whale, the second largest whale species, under
similar circumstances. It sank and was lost.

Greenland: Say no to alcohol and drugs
A new campaign against alcohol and drugs started this week in Greenland.
The two-year campaign, organized by Paarisa, the Greenland government department
responsible for preventing drug and alcohol abuse, has three key themes:
- Kids shouldn't drink alcohol;
- We should take care of kids. Parents have responsibility and society has
a responsibility, too;
- It's cool to say "no thanks" to drugs.
