Nunavik says farewell to Peter Bentley

Peter Bentley, 54, a devoted family man, long-time resident of Nunavik and respected educator, died on May 28.

Bentley began his career with the Kativik School Board in 1980 as a teacher in Kangirsuk. He went on to serve in various capacities in different communities, as a principal in Kangiqsujuaq and in Kuujjuaq, as well as a pedagogical counsellor and director of continuing education at the school board's head office in Montreal.

Most recently, Bentley was the co-ordinator of education services in Kuujjuaq.

"Peter cared deeply about the school and the people of the community, and always tried to respect and reflect that appreciation in everything that he did. He was a very intelligent man, who had a great sense of humour," said Beverly Makiuk, the vice-principal of Jaanimmarik School in Kuujjuaq.

"He always wanted us to remember where we were working, to respect the culture of the people. He was very compassionate, and helped people without talking about it. I liked working with him very much."

Bentley will be missed by all, she said, due to his involvement in every level of education in the community.

"Peter's sudden passing deeply touched everyone who knew him and worked with him," said a KSB release. "We extend our most heartfelt sympathy to his family."

Bentley leaves his wife, Lolly Annahatak, daughter Phebe, 21, and son Danielie, 19.

Bentley's funeral was held yesterday in Kuujjuaq.
