RCMP lays charges against election deadbeats

NUNATSIAQ NEWS

It’s been almost 10 months since the Nunavut General Election but 21 candidates and financial agents have not filed legally-required documents outlining their financial contributions and expenses.

Under the Nunavut Elections Act, which came into effect in 2002, that is a crime with a maximum penalty of $5,000 and/or imprisonment for one year.

The following candidates (C) and financial agents (A) have been charged with failing to file a declaration:

  • Peter Two Aulatjut (C) of Arviat
  • Janet Kigusiutnak (A) of Arviat
  • Bernard Putulik Senior (C) of Chesterfield Inlet
  • Nina Malliki (A) of Chesterfield Inlet
  • Peter Iqalukjuak (C) of Clyde River
  • Adamee Atsiqtaq (A) of Clyde River
  • Ruediger Rasch (C) of Gjoa Haven
  • Sonny Porter (C) of Gjoa Haven
  • Christine Nahalolik (A) of Gjoa Haven
  • John Amagoalik (C) of Iqaluit
  • Better Brewster (A) of Iqaluit
  • Stevie Audlakiak (C) of Qikiqtarjuaq
  • Mary Killiktee (A) of Qikiqtarjuaq
  • Angela Anawak-Gamble (A) of Rankin Inlet
  • Pauloosie Attagootak (C) of Resolute Bay
  • David Oingoot Kalluk (A) of Resolute Bay
  • Johnny Tookalook (C) of Sanikiluaq
  • Susie Tooktoo (A) of Sanikiluaq
  • Siimon Qingnaqtuq (C) of Taloyoak
  • Eva Kootook (A) of Taloyoak

The following people have also been charged with failing to deposit contributions into a bank account or failing to return the receipt book:

  • Sarah Qirqqut (A) of Gjoa Haven
  • Christine Nahalolik (two counts)
  • Mary Killiktee (two counts)
  • Susie Tooktoo (two counts)
  • Eva Kootook (two counts)

Candidates and financial agents had until April 16 to file their returns, with the possibility of an extension. They received notice of possible charges in May.

Nunavut’s integrity commissioner will now decide whether to enter into a compliance agreement with the offenders, whereby the above-listed people agree to meet a series of conditions in exchange for a stay of charges.

Failure to meet any of the integrity commissioner’s conditions would result in a day in court.
