Nunavik’s first baby was also Quebec’s first
Nunavik’s first baby of the year was also Quebec’s first baby of the year. Joanasie Junior, son of Taqaq Ningiurluut and Joanasie Usuituayuk, was born two minutes after midnight on New Year’s Day at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal.
Both parents are from Salluit. Joanasie weighed seven pounds, 14 ounces.
“He sleeps a lot,” his mother said at a press conference at the hospital. “He hasn’t cried since he was born.”
Ningiurluut, 36, has two other boys, age five and two. She came to Montreal to deliver, with little Joanasie arriving a few days earlier than expected.

Rough landing at Kuujjuaq airport
An Air Inuit flight from Puvirnituq spun out of control after landing on the Kuujjuaq airstrip on Christmas Eve.
The King Air 101 bumped and slid off the runway, damaging the airplane’s landing gear, wings and propellers, but not injuring any of the two crew members or four passengers.
Investigators from Canada’s Transport Safety Board are to visit Kuujjuaq and look into the circumstances around the incident.
