Tasiujaq man uses Montreal court trip to buy drugs, booze

The recent police round-up of pushers in Nunavik has already been forgotten by some who make their living dealing drugs.

Mark Cain, 26, of Tasiujaq was one of those who was arrested in Nunavik during the raids and taken to Montreal to face trafficking charges.

Last Friday, less than 48 hours after Cain walked out of detention in Montreal, police arrested him again in Kuujjuaq after they searched Cain's luggage and found more than 10 bottles of booze and 1.13 grams of cocaine.

"We had information that he was coming back with booze, so we intercepted him at the airport," said Brian Jones, chief of the Kativik Regional Police Force.

Cain was charged with possession of drugs and breach of conditions relating to his arrest in the huge drug ring broken two weeks ago.

Cain also received a $350 fine and six months probation.

Jones said police are asking Crown Prosecutors to process cases involving drug and alcohol charges as quickly as possible.

Police acknowledge that Cain's arrest is a sign that drugs and illegally-ordered booze are still flowing into Nunavik.

Two weeks ago, police seized dozens of bottles of hard liquor and $1,000 cash in Kangiqsujuaq.

"It's been an ongoing investigation because there's been a lot of booze coming into the community," Jones said.

"We want to continue the efforts already taken," Jones said. "And there are other things that will follow."
