Inuksuk
garden in Montreal
These eye-catching, brightly-coloured inuksuit are among seven which now stand
in a unique garden - the work of a group of mentally and physically disabled
students in Montreal.
About 50 students
ranging 4 to 21 years, with significant developmental delays and moderate
to severe intellectual disabilities, attend REACH, a school located in the
south shore suburb of Saint Lambert.
The original
project was to create two large inuksuks that would be made of cement and
stone and be decorated with mosaic art, but, with the help of mosaicist
Tatiana Iliina Gooden, the students ended up building smaller-sized inuksuks,
up to one metre high.
At the recent
dedication ceremony for the school's inuksuit garden, students also sang
the Inuktitut syllabic alphabet song.
