Homeowners call for investigation of city

Iqaluit’s homeowners’ association is calling for a territorial government investigation into the City of Iqaluit’s finances.

Keith Irving, vice president of the group, which represents about 100 Iqaluit homeowners, says the Government of Nunavut should reject the city’s 2006 budget and review its financial information. He alleges the city could be running a deficit, contrary to the territory’s regulations.

“If the capital of Nunavut runs into financial problems then it will be an embarrassment for the Government of Nunavut and ratepayers will not be in a position to bail out the city,” Irving wrote in a letter to Levinia Brown, minister of community and government services.

Irving said the GN should investigate the frequency of in-camera meetings to award contracts and discuss financial information.

This week Irving met with the minister, but so far the government has not taken a stand on the issue. However, officials in the department are following up on the request to review the city’s financial documents, according to a government spokesperson.
