KANGIRSUK — Pita Aatami will lead Makivik Corp. for another three years, after getting a strong mandate from Nunavik beneficiaries in an election held April 7.
Aatami received 83 per cent of 2,808 votes cast by Inuit beneficiaries of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement.
Harry Tulugak, a Nunavik government negotiator who ran against Aatami, finished with only 17 per cent, or 467 votes.
About fifty per cent of the region’s 5,625 eligible voters cast ballots in the election.
Aatami did well in Montreal, among delegates at the annual general meeting in Kangirsuk and in all Nunavik communities.
Aatami scored particularly well in the largest communities. He netted 89 per cent of votes cast in Kuujjuaq, 81 per cent in Inukjuak, 72 per cent in Puvirnituq and 76 per cent in Salluit.
Tulugak’s best showing was in his home community of Purvirnituq, but even there he received only 28 per cent of votes cast.
After the election, Tulugak said he ran to encourage the democratic process in Nunavik.
