Kuujjuaraapik’s new terminal officially open
NUNATSIAQ NEWS
This week, Quebec’s native affairs minister, Geoff Kelley, officially inaugurated the new air terminal at Kuujjuaraapik, on behalf of the provincial transportation minister, Julie Boulet.
The terminal was built last summer for $4 million dollars, and has been in operation since Dec. 19.
The new air terminal replaces the former cramped and nearly windowless terminal that was built in the early 1950s as part of a northern defence site at the Great Whale River.
The airport infrastructure was transferred to Quebec’s transport department in 1985. A press release from Quebec says “these installations had become obsolete over the years and were no longer meeting the needs of the communities.”
The terminal is a hub for air services to the Inuit community of Kuujjuarapik and the neighbouring Cree community of Whapmagoostui.
The Kativik Regional Government was responsible for the execution, management and supervision of construction.
