NUUK, GREENLAND — Air Greenland announced the launch of a new route to the United States in 2007, after holding its annual general meeting on Apr. 4.
Peter Grønvold Samuelsen, Air Greenland’s chairman, said the company will start regular service to the U.S. from Kangerlussuaq next May.
“For a long time now, we have been working with the idea of flying westwards. We are considering whether we should choose Canada or the United States. We will probably choose the U.S., where we intend to establish a route between Kangerlussuaq and Baltimore for part of the year, probably May to September. The route will not open until next spring because we need the time in between to prepare the customer base,” Samuelsen said.
Icelandair also uses Baltimore as a U.S. destination for its flights from Reykjavik.
Samuelsen said operators are already very interested in opening Greenland to tourists from North America.
“The route will also open up new tourist destinations for the people of Greenland and provide opportunities for businesses. Expansion of the route so that it is available all year round is possible,” said Flemming Knudsen, Air Greenland’s president.
Air Inuit had been exploring a route from Nunavik to Greenland, but landing fees and fuel for foreign aircraft are extremely high, according to Air Inuit management.
However, Greenland is still making approaches to Canada for a closer collaboration. Josef Motzfeldt, the minister for foreign issues in Greenland, plans to visit Canada on April 27 to meet representatives of the Canadian government.
