Crees set to sign deal
on Feb. 7
Following a community tour
by Cree leaders, Cree in the James Bay region are expected to back their Grand
Councils recent deal with Quebec despite some opposition by Cree
who dont want more hydro-electric development.
The deal would give the
Cree $3.5 billion in benefits and compensation in exchange for dropping their
court cases against Quebec. They would also agree not to block a planned hydro-electric
project on the Rupert-Eastmain River.
The Grand Council is expected
to approve the deal at a meeting on Jan. 30.
Also on the table is an
additional agreement, worth $862 million, with Hydro-Quebec, for construction
work and training on the Rupert River hydro-electric project.
The original deal signed
by Grand Chief Ted Moses and Quebec Premier Bernard Landry last October has
now grown to 100 pages and 10 separate agreements.
Moses has dubbed this landmark
set of agreements as the "Peace of the Braves."
On Feb. 7, the two leaders
are planning to hold one signing ceremony in Waskaganish or Waswanipi and then
fly to Montreal for a second signing ceremony.
