Acts fall off the order paper

Bill 16, amendments to the Cities, Towns and Villages Act and Bill 17, the Hamlets Act fell off the order paper last week after the standing committee on community empowerment and sustainable development requested time to review concerns raised by members.

The bills received second reading in November, but now must be reintroduced during a subsequent session.

"The committee is in full support of empowerment initiatives, but strongly cautions the department to ensure that policies are put in place to ensure that training, support and resources are provided to match the increased powers and responsibilities that may be undertaken by municipalities," said Baker Lake MLA Glenn McLean.
