New Internet provider in Salluit

Nunavik’s cooperative network, the Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau-Québec, plans to launch its new Ilagi Internet Service Provider in Salluit on April 8 at a community feast.

Ilagi will rely on the same wire-based system that now delivers cable television to local residents in the community. This means Salluit’s cable TV subscribers who want Internet service can now buy Internet access over the same cable system.

The FCNQ next plans to offer its Internet service to Puvirnituq. According to its five-year expansion plan, the FCNQ intends to bring the Internet to all communities in Nunavik, whether or not they currently receive cable service through a FCNQ-cable system.

The profitability of the new ISP system will depend on the number of subscribers, said Robert Giacobbe, manager of FCNQ’s Internet project.

"It doesn’t go without the cooperation of the people," Giacobbe said.

For more information on the FCNQ’s Internet service, consult the FCNQ’s Internet Service Web site at www.ilagi.ca.
