Threats, theft and jail time
Sii Ashoona, 20, of Cape
Dorset was sentenced on Tuesday to 13 months in jail after pleading guilty to
uttering threats, obstructing justice and breaking and entering.
Ashoona was following a
female relative around Cape Dorset on Dec. 13, 2001. When the woman spun around
to confront Ashoona, he called her a "rat." He warned her to be afraid
of drug dealers and suggested he was one. The court never heard why he uttered
the remarks.
Two weeks later, in a separate
incident, Ashoona interrupted a police chase by giving a suspect a ride on his
snowmobile. The man is alleged to have doused his home with gasoline and threatened
to light a match. Ashoonas lawyer, Andy Mahar, said his client had no
knowledge of the gasoline incident but said Ashoona picked up the male knowing
the police were chasing him.
On Feb. 25, Ashoona broke
into the storage room belonging to the Polar Lodge at about 8 p.m. An employee
found Ashoona slicing into a cardboard box of liquor bottles. Ashoona offered
the employee half of the liquor order not to call police. The employee declined
the offer.
On Feb. 27, Ashoona was
arrested for failing to attend court. He was found in possession of a stolen
snowmobile headlight at the time of his arrest.
While remanded in the RCMP
cells in Cape Dorset, Ashoona grew agitated and told an officer, "You better
be ready to die."
Crown lawyer John Solski
asked for an 18-month sentence.
"Whats it going
to take to make you grow up?" asked judge Beverly Browne, noting the federal
time Ashoona recently served for another crime.
"Youve been
to one of the worst places and yet you still got into trouble ... I wish I knew
the magic words to make you stay out of trouble."
Ashoona has been in custody
since Feb. 27.
