Booze search ends in a bust

Jay Victor Evalik, 19, was sentenced to nine months in jail for break and enter in Cambridge Bay.

The teen was caught attempting to pry open the front door of a relative’s home with a steel bar on March 6. The family member, who was home at the time, called the police. When she asked Evalik what he was doing, he replied, "My friends told me there was booze here."

Evalik was in violation of a court-ordered curfew in connection with similar charges at the time of the incident. His lawyer said Evalik has a "severe drinking problem."

Evalik requested a nine-month sentence so he can complete an alcohol rehabilitation program while in custody.
