Do the crime, do the time

Simon Aoudla, 20, was sentenced to one year in jail after pleading guilty to assaulting his 14-year-old pregnant girlfriend on two separate occasions this year.

The first assault sent the teen to Baffin Regional Hospital on April 23 with a bloody nose. She was eight months pregnant at the time.

On May 19, Aoudla came home drunk and began slapping the girl in the face, court heard. The girl fell to the floor and Aoudla began kicking her.

After grabbing her by the neck and trying to strangle her, he threatened to kill himself and the pregnant teen.

The girl never went to the police. However, when she went into labour two days later, a family member noticed the bruising to her neck and called the RCMP.

Before hearing the sentence, Aoudla expressed concern about jail time.

"I’m having a hard time at BCC," he said.

An unrelenting Justice Beverley Browne offered little sympathy.

"Perhaps this experience will teach you to treat people with respect. You’re learning a tough lesson at a tough age," Browne said.
