Roads not for royalty

Make no mistake about it, Iqaluit roads are not being paved for the Queen.

The city’s engineering department is frustrated by the rumours going around Iqaluit that roads are being paved in preparation for the Queen’s visit in October.

"This project has nothing to do with the Queen coming," Matthew Hough, the city’s director of engineering, told council during its Sept. 10 session.

In fact, he said, the paving is simply a continuation of the 2000 and 2001 paving programs. Plans to pave some of Iqaluit’s roads were drafted in 2000, he pointed out.

This season, part of Federal Road is being paved along with the stretch from city hall to the high school, and the area from NorthMart to the entrance of Happy Valley.
