Cambridge Bay man sent to BCC for B&E, assault

Jerry Etegiak, 23, of Cambridge Bay was sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to break and enter, two counts of assault and obstructing a police officer.

Etegiak instructed a 15-year-old boy to break into a Cambridge Bay house. Once inside, the teen took three 40-ounce bottles of vodka. The youth has been charged under the Young Offenders Act and is being tried separately.

Armed with two bottles of vodka, Etegiak went to a house full of teens. The more he drank, the more agitated he became, the court heard.

"He grabbed one girl by the throat and threw her to the ground," said Crown lawyer Judy Chan.

Etegiak later cornered a 14-year-old girl in the bathroom and harassed her.

"He basically terrorized a bunch of kids. Being drunk is no excuse," Chan said.

Once in police custody, Etegiak was subdued with pepper spray after he reached for an officer’s neck and said, "I’m not going in there [the cell]."

He will serve a year probation upon his release.
