RCMP investigate killing of Pond man

Investigators from the RCMP's major crime unit in Nunavut are now investigating an incident on Sept. 11 in which an RCMP officer from Pond Inlet shot and killed a knife-wielding Pond Inlet man who had stabbed his wife and was threatening to harm a young boy.

The man, Naytanie Atadjuat, 26, was threatening his wife with a knife when police arrived at a house in Pond Inlet just after 4 p.m. that day in response to a domestic violence call.

An RCMP news release says the man made "threatening overtures" toward his wife, stabbed her in the neck, and then ran away to another house.

When police confronted him in the second house, Atadjuat was threatening to hurt a young boy with his knife.

An RCMP officer fired one shot at Atadjuat, who died soon after at the Pond Inlet health centre.

Because of the investigation, police say they're not releasing any more information about the incident.
