Iqaluit carver to stand trial for sexual assault

Ruben Komangapik, 26, of Iqaluit, will go to trial on a charge of sexual assault following a preliminary hearing on Sept. 26 in Iqaluit.

Komangapik, who worked on the Nunavut legislative assembly’s mace, was serving a conditional sentence for another sexual assault when the new charge was laid.

The charge alleges that Komangapik forced himself upon a female complainant on Dec. 7, 2001.

A publication ban prevents Nunatsiaq News from reporting details of the preliminary hearing.

The matter was adjourned until Oct. 23 to set a trial date.
