Federal time for raping
and terrorizing
A man who sexually assaulted
his former girlfriend and later terrorized her at the Iqaluit womens shelter
was sentenced to 30 months in prison.
Sevanoosie Boaz, 32, was
flown south this week to serve the sentence at the Fenbrook penitentiary in
central Ontario.
Boaz forced his way into
his former girlfriends bedroom in Iqaluit and raped her on Dec. 25, 2001.
He continued harassing
her until she moved to the Iqaluit womens shelter with her baby in February.
She called the RCMP after
speaking with a counsellor, but Boaz continued to communicate with the complainant
despite her efforts to avoid him.
"He made repeated
attempts to contact her at the shelter, putting the clients on edge at night,"
said Crown lawyer Judy Chan.
Boaz was arrested in May
2002 and remanded in custody.
Justice Earl Johnson referred
to Boazs actions as "terrorizing" for the victim.
Boaz will be prohibed from
owning a firearm for 10 years after the end of his sentence, and is ordered
not to contact his victim.
