Good gas, we hope

The new supply of gasoline delivered to communities this summer is of a greater quality than last year’s supply — and even better than southern gasoline, Public Works Minister Peter Kattuk said on Tuesday.

The gasoline delivered to communities in the Baffin and Kivalliq regions last year caused severe damage in snowmobiles and outboard motors because it was missing a key additive.

This year’s gas looks much different than last year’s, possibly because of the additive. It is also of higher octane than last year’s supply, Kattuk said in a minister’s statement. High-octane gasoline burns cleaner than gasoline of lower octane levels.

"This year’s gasoline grade is described as extreme, which is similar to the supreme grade gasoline. The octane level of 91 is higher than the regular southern gasoline octane of 87 and near the 92 octane level of supreme southern gasoline," he said.

"In addition, the vapour pressure of 94, a level higher than southern gasoline supplies, will aid in the ease of engine starting."

High-octane gasoline in the South costs much more than regular gasoline. But Kattuk made no mention of a price increase.
