Queen Elizabeth II and
Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, arrive in Iqaluit on Oct. 4 for a whirlwind
tour of the capital city. They are greeted by Premier Paul Okalik, Prime Minister
Jean Chrétien and his wife, Aline, along with Nunavut Commissioner Peter
Irniq and his wife, Marie.
Nunavummiut line the street
as the Queen walks from the legislature to the Four Corners. The Royal motorcade
then takes her to Inuksuk High School where she spends time with elders and
youth in the tisi area, and Prince Philip presents Duke of Edinburgh awards
in a private ceremony in the schools cafeteria.
The couple meet again in
the gymnasium where they, along with the premier and prime minister are treated
to a demonstration of Arctic sports by athletes from around the territory. After
another short walkabout at the Arctic College sculpture garden, the couple departs
for the airport and the rest of their 11-day Canadian tour.
