Lucie Idlout stars in Toronto
play
In a novel career move,
Inuit singer Lucie Idlout will star in Two Words for Snow, a play that opens
this weekend at the Artword Theatre in Toronto.
The plays Toronto
publicists describe Two Words for Snow as "a lyrical account of the love, passion
and betrayal surrounding the 1909 Peary expedition to the North Pole."
Its written by poet
Richard Sanger, directed by Ross Manson, and produced by Volcano, an award-winning
experimental theatre company from Toronto.
Sangers play tells
the story of Matthew Henson, a black man who accompanied Robert Peary to the
North Pole, and whom Peary later betrayed and discarded.
Idlout, best known in Nunavut
for the CD E5770 My Mothers Name, is also the host of the APTN
show Buffalo Tracks. In Two Words for Snow, she plays the role of Akatingwah,
Matthew Hensons Greenlandic lover.
The play opens Jan. 11
and runs to Jan. 19.

Nunavut goose turns up
in Scotland
A snow goose from Bylot
Island near Pond Inlet has turned up on the Hebridean island of Islay off the
west coast of Scotland, the National Post reported this week.
Bylot Island snow geese
normally winter in the U.S. state of Maryland.
Experts say the errant
North Baffin goose may have followed a group of white-fronted geese, a closely
related species.

Echo Bay charged in death
of mine worker
The Nunavut-NWT Workers
Compensation Board has charged Echo Bay Mines Ltd. with five offences under
Nunavuts Mine Health and Safety Act, in connection with the death of miner
David Francis Matthews in December 2001 at the Lupin Mine.
A WCB news release says
that the offences allege that the company failed to take every reasonable precaution
to ensure the safety of its workers, specifically in the training and in the
operation of equipment from a safe location.
If convicted, Echo Bay
Mines Ltd. would face a fine of $500,000 for each offence.
The aging, small-scale
Lupin gold mine in the Kitikmeot is the last producing mine left in Nunavut.

Igloolik fire under investigation
Police are treating a minor
fire that caused $100 in superficial damage to Iglooliks community hall
on Dec. 31 as suspicious, said Mayor Elijah Evaluarjuk.
A teen dance was under
way at 3:30 a.m. when bystanders noticed smoke coming from the buildings
hallway.
No one was injured in the
early-morning blaze. Three volunteer firefighters were medevaced to Iqaluit
where they were treated for chemical exposure from the firefighting materials.
Evaluarjuk said the fire
was quickly contained and the RCMP are continuing their investigation.
"Weve heard someone
lit the fire on purpose," Evaluarjuk said.

Baffin businesses set trade
show date
The Baffin Regional Chamber
of Commerce announced this week that this years Nunavut Trade Show will
be held May 1 to 3 at Iqaluits Arctic Winter Games Arena.
Organizers brag that its
"Northern Canadas largest business event."
During the three-day event,
business people from southern Canada and Nunavut will exhibit their wares and
schmooze each other at a variety of social events.

Rankin Inlet man charged with drug possession
Cody Utman, 23, faces one
charge of drug possession after Rankin Inlet RCMP seized a stash of marijuana
with an estimated street value of $6,700 on Jan. 3.
The drugs were seized at
the Rankin Inlet airport.
Utman was released on a
promise to appear in the Nunavut Court of Justice on April 1.
