Iqaluit in 20 years

Highlights of the proposed general plan for Iqaluit:

• The downtown core will remain the business centre of the city. Mixed-use buildings — with offices on the ground floor and apartment units on the upper floors — are encouraged.

• A "capital district" will be created around the Legislative Assembly building. Most new government offices will be built here.

• Land for new housing will be developed in the following areas: downtown, Road to Nowhere subdivision, Lake subdivision, Apex South, Tundra Valley East, Quarry Subdivision (along Apex Road), the area west of Nunavut Power Corp. and Arctic College, the west and east sides of Apex Road and Apex East.

• The city will designate either the area in front of Nakasuk School or the section east of NorthMart as a community gathering place.

• New buildings in the downtown core will have to meet new "urban design guidelines."

• Parking lots must be built on the side or rear of buildings to cut down on traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety.
