Annie Gordon
A tragic death for Kuujjuaq and Iqaluit — Annie Gordon, 40, died suddenly May 3 at Kuujjuaq’s Tulattavik health centre, where she was under treatment for depression. Gordon, a well-known social activist who most recently served as executive director for the Isuarsivik Treatment Centre in Kuujjuaq, spent much of her youth in Iqaluit. After returning there as an adult to work for the Government of Nunavut, she was elected in 2003 to a three-year term on Iqaluit City Council, taking 944 votes, more than any other candidate. She subsequently served as deputy mayor and on several council committees. She leaves her husband, Toma, and five children. See next week’s Nunatsiaq News for more. (FILE PHOTO)
