Courtroom security in Nunavut not our responsibility: RCMP

“We are not able to provide this service”

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

The RCMP in Nunavut is not responsible for security in the territory’s courtrooms, the RCMP said March 28.

The RCMP has a contractual arrangement with the Government of Nunavut to provide policing services, the RCMP said in news release.

The RCMP is provided with resources from the GN for those services, but “providing security for the courthouse is not among the services that the RCMP is contracted to provide.”

In the past, and “on a case-by-case basis, when resources are available,” the RCMP did furnish security for the courthouse. But in the case of thepreliminary inquiry into the manslaughter charge against Colin Makpah of Rankin Inlet, “we are not able to provide this service,” the new release stated.

The RCMP statement follows the second adjournment of the preliminary hearing on March 28, when citing a lack of security, Nunavut Justice Andrew Mahar adjourned proceedings in Makpah’s preliminary hearing until April 2.
