Does First Air care about Kimmirut?

“I’m also interested in whether we can get some kind of watchdog”

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Why is the full economic fare so high for the short flights from Iqaluit to Kimmirut?

Can you believe it can be $810 for a return fare or $400 one-way? A one way flight is only 30 minutes, or about 120 air kilometres.

Anyone can figure out some examples of what this amount of money can fly you elsewhere. We know that First Air got rid of their Twin Otter fleet some years ago, but continue to operate tickets using Kenn Borek’s Twin Otter fleets.

How can Makivik Corp. help?

If it wasn’t for the QIB10 for the beneficiaries, it would be very difficult to fly out, so thank you to Qikiqtani Inuit Association for providing the subsidy.

This can tell everyone that a monopoly can become severely expensive and the operation between the two communities is extremely expensive.

There aren’t even any special fares that First Air offers from Iqaluit to Kimmirut, not that I’ve seen recently. I’m also interested in whether we can get some kind of watchdog regarding the ongoing increases in air fares.

Also there seem to be many early cancellations of First Air flights to Kimmirut. We know the weather sometimes becomes a factor, but sometimes we wonder why they can’t reschedule for a later time.

I’m guessing that the Borek plane has other arrangements to fly elsewhere. With this, I wonder if First Air really cares.
