Quebec police are investigating the death of a Kangirsuk man this week.

On Sunday, April 11, the family of 41-year-old George Lucassie reported him missing.

Lucassie’s mother became worried when he didn’t come home for dinner Saturday evening.

The following day, search and rescue teams and local police asked Quebec provincial police to assist in the search.

Lucassie was found later that day about four kilometres from the village with bloodstains on his clothing. He was pronounced dead at the local health care centre.

The Sûreté du Québec have ordered an autopsy on Lucassie’s body to help pinpoint the cause of his death, said police spokesman Claude Denis.

Kangirsuk Canadian Ranger Tommy Kudluk found Lucassie’s body on Monday after following the man’s footprints from a nearby creek and out towards the sea.

According to those tracks, Kudluk said Lucassie had been staggering and “walking all over the place.”

Although Lucassie has been with friends before he went missing, only his footprints were found. Some people in the village say there had been a fight among some men.

“I really don’t know what happened when they were together,” Kudluk said. “I think he was lost, it may have been at night.”

Lucassie was the elders’ van driver in Kangirsuk. He leaves a son.
