'It's kind of tiring to live like that'

Man loses baseball game, starts gun rampage

Residents of Kangiqsualujjuaq cowered inside their houses on the afternoon of May 19, when a frustrated ball player took pot shots around the community before heading down a road that leads towards popular camp grounds.

After the man lost a baseball game, witnesses say he pummeled another ball player and then went to a shack near the baseball diamond to fetch a firearm.

The man fired several shots and then took off on his all-terrain vehicle out of town. On the way, he fired several more shots.

A resident who called Nunatsiaq News during the incident said it was sixth time this man had committed similar firearms offenses.

Reinforcements arrived Monday afternoon from the Kativik Regional Police Force in Kuujjuaq to assist the police officer in the community.

Police later exchanged shots with the man, who was taken into custody about 5 p.m. No one was hurt.

"It's kind of tiring to live like that," said the caller, who wished to remain be unidentified. "We need to say we're not perfect here. We're like every other town. We're having the same problems here as anybody else."

The Sûrété du Québec provincial police force investigators were called in from Rouyn-Noranda to investigate the incident, but they had not completed their investigation by Nunatsiaq News press time.
