Alikatuktuk keeps top job at QIA

Just 35 percent of eligible voters bother to cast ballot

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Baffin beneficiaries re-elected Thomasie Alikatuktuk as QIA president on Dec. 12.

He received 1,924 votes, according to unofficial results, beating out rival Jacopoosie Peter, who received 723 votes.

The total voter turnout was 35 per cent of eligible voters.

That means only one in four eligible beneficiaries cast ballots for Alikatuktuk. He will serve a three-year term.

Seven community directors were also elected. They are: Ashevak Ezekiel from Cape Dorset; James Qillak from Clyde River; Jaypetee Audlakiaq from Hall Beach; George Qualaut from Igloolik; Matto Michael from Kimmirut; Ross Pudluk from Resolute Bay; and Joe Arragutainaq from Sanikiluaq.

Only Hall Beach and Kimmirut elected new representatives.

The new members will also serve for a three-year term.
