IQALUIT — Iqaluit town councillor Doug Lem has been charged with four counts of sexual interference.

Lem, 35, operates a catering business in Iqaluit, serves as chair of Iqaluit’s adult justice committee, and throughout most of the 1990s served as a volunteeer with a variety of community organizations.

Lem was elected to Iqaluit’s town council on Oct. 20, 1997. His three-year term expires this fall.

Staff Sgt. Jim MacDougall of the Iqaluit RCMP said the charges relate to incidents alleged to have occurred between July, 1999 and January, 2000, and that they arise from an investigation that began last November.

MacDougall said Lem was arrested and charged Jan. 29, and that he will appear in court April 3.

The offence known as “sexual interference,” described in section 151 of the Criminal Code, refers to anyone who touches a child under the age of 14 for a sexual purpose.
